Following a sewing pattern can seem intimidating at first, but with a little practice and patience, you can learn how to create beautiful handmade projects. Here are some steps to help you get started.
1. Gather all of the materials you need
This includes the sewing pattern, fabric, thread, buttons, scissors, pins, and any other notions specified in the pattern instructions. Pay attention to any callouts that specify what kind of fabric you should use, or if you’ll need a zipper.
2. Figure out what size you’ll need
Vintage patterns use a different sizing scale than modern patterns which can be really confusing for beginners. The best way to ensure you’re getting the right size is to match up your measurements with the finished measurements listed on the back of your pattern.
3. Read through the pattern instructions before you start sewing
Read through all of the instructions at least once before getting started. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve skipped ahead without reading just to find out too late that I had made a mistake.
4. Cut out the pattern pieces
Make sure to follow the cutting lines and any notches or dots on the pattern. The notches might seem unnecessary to cut, but they help you line up your fabric perfectly once it’s time to sew. Don’t skip this step! Also, be sure to use sharp scissors and take your time to ensure that the pieces are accurately cut.
5. Pin the pattern pieces to the fabric, following the markings on the pattern
Be sure to use plenty of pins to hold the fabric and pattern together so it doesn’t move as you’re cutting.
6. Sew the pieces together according to the pattern instructions.
Use a straight stitch for most projects, and be sure to backstitch (stitching in reverse) at the beginning and end of each seam to secure the stitches. If the pattern calls for any special techniques, such as a zipper insertion or buttonholes, be sure to follow the instructions carefully.
Pro tip: if you pin perpendicular to your stitching, you can sew right over your pins without taking them out!
7. Add the finishing touches
Taking the extra time to properly hem your edges and finish any seams will help your project look professional and polished.
With a little practice and patience, you’ll be able to create beautiful handmade projects by following a sewing pattern. Have fun, and happy sewing!
