What are sewing notions?

Sewing notions are essentially sewing accessories that help you complete a sewing project. Common items like needles and thread are considered notions but there are a lot more that you may or may not be familiar with as well. Here are some of my favorite notions to keep on-hand for any project.

Zippers

It’s a good idea to have a couple different zippers on hand for projects. Invisible zippers are great for fitted garments, but you might also use standard zippers for home decor projects, jeans, or sewing zip-up bags.

Buttons

Buttons are a lot of fun to collect, especially since they come in so many colors, shapes, and sizes. I recommend getting buttons in packs of 6-10 so that you’ll have enough of one kind in case you want to use them along the front of a dress, shirt, skirt, or jacket. It sucks to have only two or three of a cool button when you really wanted to use them for a project that requires more.

Elastic

Elastic is essential for many types of projects including waistbands, fitted sleeves, swimwear, fitted waist dresses, and more. Having a few types of elastic on hand for these types of projects is always a great idea. Some common sizes are 1″ wide, 1/2″ wide, 1/4″ wide.

Bias Tape

I have collected SO MUCH bias tape over the past year and I just keep buying more. Like buttons, it comes in so many colors and patterns and anytime I see some that I like, I just buy a couple packs of it to use on a future project. While you only need a foot or two to so a neckline, you’ll need a lot more to finish the edges of an entire coat or jacket, so go ahead and get a couple of packs of bias tape at a time so you don’t run out mid-way through a project. You’ll also want to check the width of your tape to make sure you get the look you’re hoping for. Don’t forget to check if it’s single or double fold too!

Piping

I haven’t dabbled in using piping yet, but I love the effect it has on finished pieces. Not only does it come in a variety of colors and patterns, but it also comes in different shapes like scalloped and lace. I mostly see piping used on jackets, home decor, button down shirts, and around collars, but you really could use it along just about any seam.

If you had to pick a favorite notion to collect, what would it be? What do you have the most of in your sewing supply kit?
